Keys that will not turn, stiff barrels and trapped keys
A sticking ignition may involve a worn blade, damaged wafers inside the barrel, contamination, a steering lock under load or a fault elsewhere in the mechanism. A key trapped after switching off can also involve the release mechanism or, on some vehicles, the gear-selector interlock. The symptoms need checking together rather than treating every case as barrel wear.
Do not force the key, twist it with pliers or repeatedly try to start the vehicle. A bent or broken blade can make diagnosis and removal harder. If the vehicle is in an unsafe roadside position, arrange safe assistance first and tell us exactly where it is.
Mechanical barrel, steering lock housing or electrical switch?
The ignition barrel is the lock into which a physical key fits. Its mechanical components permit the correct blade to turn. The steering lock housing supports the mechanism and can contain parts that lock or release the steering column. The electrical ignition switch controls electrical functions as the key moves through its positions; these are separate components even when assembled together.
A key turning normally without the expected dashboard or starter response may indicate an electrical switch fault, but battery condition, wiring, starter operation and immobiliser recognition can cause similar behaviour. Describing what lights appear, whether the starter operates and whether a spare key behaves differently helps establish the next diagnostic step.
Repair versus replacement following inspection
Where the mechanism is suitable and the damage is repairable, a barrel repair may retain serviceable parts. Cracked housings, badly damaged components or unavailable repair parts may instead call for replacement. An inspection determines which option is appropriate; not every barrel can be repaired.
Whether an existing key can continue to operate a replacement depends on the lock design, available parts and condition of the key. Programming is not automatically required for every mechanical barrel replacement, but work involving key electronics or immobiliser components may require additional steps. These are explained for the specific vehicle rather than promised in advance.
Supported cars and vans in Winchester
Support is checked using the registration, model, year and starting-system type. We cover supported Ford Transit variants and selected Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda models; the specialist pages below explain their differing systems. A badge alone does not confirm that a particular mechanical, electronic or keyless ignition can be serviced.
Mobile work can be arranged at a driveway in Weeke, a business unit in Winnall or another accessible parking location around Winchester. Space, safe access and the fault itself determine what can be done at the vehicle. No workshop premises or universal roadside completion is implied.
What to tell us when requesting ignition help
Give the vehicle registration, approximate year and its location. Tell us whether the key enters fully, whether it turns, whether it is stuck, and what the dashboard and starter do. Mention any damage, previous repairs and whether a spare key behaves the same way.
Photo identification and documentation linking you to the vehicle are required before lock or key work. Do not post sensitive paperwork through the quote form; describe the symptoms and we can discuss the documentation needed.

Ignition questions
+ Does a stiff key mean the ignition barrel needs replacing?
Not necessarily. A worn key, contamination, steering lock load or damage to another part can produce similar symptoms. Inspection separates the key fault from barrel, housing and switch faults.
+ Can you remove a key stuck in the ignition?
This may be possible on supported vehicles, depending on why the key is trapped and the condition of the mechanism. Do not force it; tell us the registration and whether the key will move.
+ Will an ignition replacement use my existing key?
Sometimes, but it depends on the vehicle, replacement components and key condition. Retaining the original key is not guaranteed.
+ Does every ignition repair need key programming?
No. Purely mechanical work may not change the immobiliser electronics. Programming requirements depend on the components and vehicle involved.
+ Can you repair push-button or electronic ignition systems?
Support is assessed individually. These systems differ from a conventional barrel, and we do not offer universal electronic or keyless ignition coverage.
