The chip in the key
The chip has no battery. When the key is near the ignition, a coil in the car energises it and reads its code. A match releases the immobiliser.
Why cutting alone is not enough
A copied blade will open the doors and turn in the ignition, but the car will crank without firing, or start and cut out. Programming is what completes the job.
