Check the obvious places first
Before arranging anything, retrace the last few places the key was used. Keys turn up in coat linings, shopping bags and the footwell far more often than people expect.
If the key was lost in a public place, it is worth reporting it, particularly if the registration or an address was attached to the fob.
What happens on an all-keys-lost job
The locksmith identifies the correct key type for your vehicle, cuts a blade to the lock and then programmes the transponder or smart key so the immobiliser recognises it.
On many vehicles previously stored keys can be erased at the same time, so a key that has been lost or stolen no longer starts the car. Whether that is possible depends on the make, model and year.
Have this information ready
Registration, make, model, approximate year, where the vehicle is parked and confirmation that no working key remains. That is usually enough to identify the key and give a sensible quote.
