Cutting a key with nothing to copy
Rather than duplicating an existing blade, the locksmith works from the door lock or ignition, or from key code information tied to the vehicle. The finished blade operates the mechanical locks.
A cut blade alone will not start a modern car. The electronic side — transponder or smart key — has to be programmed separately.
Proof of ownership
Expect to be asked for photo identification and paperwork linking you to the vehicle, such as the V5C or an insurance document. This is standard practice and protects vehicle owners.
Vehicles that are harder to key
